About this Coffee

Kagumo Factory is operated by the Mutira Farmers Cooperative Society, which represents roughly 4,000 smallholder farmers across several coffee factories in Kenya's Kirinyaga region. Kirinyaga is home to Mt. Kenya and receives 50 inches of rain per year, creating many rivers through the region, a wealth of exotic wildlife, and rich, volcanic soil that produce some of Kenya’s most fruit-forward coffees.

In Kenya, coffee is typically traceable to the factory level, where farmers deliver freshly harvested cherries for processing. Because lots are built from many small deliveries, it is often difficult to trace coffee back to individual producers. This cooperative allows smallholder farmers to access processing infrastructure while contributing to larger, high-quality lots.

Batian, SL28, SL34, and Ruiru 11 varieties are considered the backbones of Kenya’s specialty coffee, known for bright citrusy acidity, fruit forward flavors, and heavy body. Washed process coffees contribute a vibrant, layered sweetness, and the distinctive fruit-forward character we love to experience in Kenyan coffees.
