We are thrilled to share some exciting news: our coffee from producers Francisca and Oscar Chacon of Las Lajas Micromill in Costa Rica has been honored with a 2023 Good Food Award! This achievement marks a milestone as we become the only three-time winner in our region, which includes Idaho, Washington, Oregon, the Dakotas, Montana, Wyoming, and Alaska. Winning this award is a testament to our dedication to sustainable sourcing practices and our passion for perfecting the art of roasting some of the highest-quality coffee in the world.
The Winning Coffee
The award-winning coffee from Finca Calle Lajas is an Alma Negra Natural. This process produces a coffee that is bright and full-bodied, with sparkling acidity and a rich, velvety mouthfeel. Oscar and Francisca Chacon of Las Lajas Micromill are third-generation coffee producers known for their unwavering commitment to quality and innovation. They are pioneers in Costa Rica, recognized for being among the first to produce honey-processed coffees, a hallmark of their expertise and creativity.
The Farm & Producers
Las Lajas Micromill's journey into honey processing began in 2008 when an earthquake disrupted access to water for several weeks. Drawing inspiration from the pulped-natural and natural processing methods used in Brazil and Ethiopia, Oscar experimented with his harvest that year. The results were extraordinary. Around the same time, Andrew Miller, the founder and president of Café Imports, visited the area. He was so impressed by the Chacons' innovative coffee that he became one of the first buyers of this revolutionary process.
Their pioneering spirit continues to shine, and this award-winning coffee is a testament to their legacy of excellence.
