ABOUT THE COFFEE…

In the northeast region of Kirinyaga lives the Kamwangi factory, the second out of three cooperatives that the New Ngariama Farmers Cooperative Society (F.C.S.) has established. There are roughly 985 active members that deliver coffee to the factory, with each farmer owning about 200-250 coffee trees on ⅛ to ¼ of a hectare.

Coffee in Kenya is mostly traceable down to the factory or mill level, as most farmers often grow other crops along with coffee, and rely on central processing units for processing and selling their coffee. Producers deliver their coffee in cherry form, and cooperatives will sort, weigh, and issue payment for the delivery. The coffee is mixed in with the other deliveries from the day and processed all together. This system serves hundreds to thousands of smallholder farmers at each cooperative, limiting traceability to the individual producers.

Kenyan coffees are at the top of the premium specialty coffee world, with their consistency in high quality and availability. This coffee has the classic intense flavor profile that Kenya's are known for with tasting notes of orange, blackberry, caramel, and dark chocolate.
